For men only

devereauxby Bruce Devereaux, Stephen Minister

Why do men have to be lost before they’ll ask for driving directions? Can the same be asked about men seeking help for emotional, grief or other personal issues? Owen Pearson and I are Stephen Ministers at Bethany willing to come alongside other men in times of emotional and spiritual need. But why is it so difficult to reach out? Have you ever found yourself thinking, “I can do it. Am I weak? Buck up! What will others think of me if I admit I need help?”

You’re out of control when receiving (and we all know how men must be in control). From personal experience, I believe that receiving is also the place where God’s grace is most evident. I no longer can nor must depend on my strength. I can be vulnerable and reach out for help. It’s uncomfortable but it’s where healing takes place.

Pastor Anthony Robinson in an August 2, 2008 article in the Seattle P-I wrote about how difficult it is to receive. “As Jesus bid farewell to his closest friends and followers, his dramatic teaching to those who would lead others was simple but hard: In order to lead, you must be led. In order to give, you, too must receive. You can’t share with others what you haven’t received yourself. Before you extend mercy, you yourself have received it.”

May Bethany be a place of grace where all are comfortable to receive by admitting our weaknesses and needs and allowing others to help; emotionally, spiritually and in other ways.
